“He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.” Psalm 18:19
WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?
At its most basic, spiritual direction is the discernment of God’s presence and leading in the midst of a one-on-one relationship.
Unlike a counselor, discipler, mentor or coach, the role of the director is more as a guide and less as a teacher or problem solver. The director does not impart opinion or content, but co-listens to God with the directee. Why practice this?
“Looking clearly at things in the presence of God brings clarity, healing and growth. Spiritual direction conversations provide a setting in which to do this “ Jeannette A. Bakke
WHAT, THEN, DOES A SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR ACTUALLY DO?
In spiritual direction, the director helps others notice God in the most ordinary life circumstances.
The ministry of spiritual direction is presence. It truly is the gift of being with another in an unhurried and prayerful space. I meet with directees once a month (for about an hour) and through silence, prayer, and the Word, we humbly ask, “What is the Lord up to in your life? What faithful response is he inviting?” I love watching for God’s movements and abiding love in the lives of the directees I meet with. We practice a preference for God (looking and listening for Him) in every aspect of life.
“First and foremost, the director listens. To listen to another person in a way that helps that person hear the grace and truth of God is one of the greatest gifts we can give.” Alice Fryling, Seeking God Together
WHO COMES TO SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?
Those experiencing transitions in their life or in their faith. Those who are longing to pursue God in new ways. Those desiring space to pause and listen. Those curious about the leading of the Holy Spirit. Those wanting to pay closer attention to their relationship with God.
In my own life of faith I have reaped countless benefits from meeting with a spiritual director. While the silence was disarming at first, I have grown to enjoy those moments to be still and listen with my own director. She continually holds prayerful space so we might both notice the movements and invitations of God.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING OUR ONE HOUR SESSION?
Our time will typically include space to breathe, pray, spend time in silence, read scripture, have prayerful conversation, and co-listen together.
The directee shares what the Spirit brings to mind… for example:
Desire for your relationship with God.Ways you are noticing God’s activity in your life.
What brings you to Spiritual direction.
The ways you experience God in prayer.
If you are experiencing any resistance in your time with God.
All that you are noticing in your life of faith.
WHAT IS THE COST OF A SPIRITUAL DIRECTION SESSION?
The cost of a Spiritual Direction session can be discussed at the time of the initial meeting, but someone will never be turned away if there is financial distress. Payment can be made in person or through Paypal or Zelle.
I conduct direction both in-person sessions or over a communications platform like zoom or google chat.
